With some of the most significant discoveries in recent years and world class exploration opportunities, the energy outlook for Western Africa continues to be very promising, with exploration and development opportunities for Supermajors, NOC’s, as well as medium and small sized independents.

In the deeper water basins off the southern part of the region the focus is very much the sub-salt exploration, with deepwater specialists trying to mirror success of similar plays in the Santos and Campos basins off Brazil. In the northern part of the region Tullow’s success in French Guiana mirrors its success in the West Africa Transform Margin. The success of the Upper Cretaceous turbidite plays in Ghana and increased political stability in countries bordering the West Africa Transform Margin continues to attract exploration oriented companies.

By re-defining their Petroleum Legislation with increased emphasis on local content and environmental concerns many countries are trying to expand their domestic industries. In the more mature basins, this will also tend to lead to opportunities for development-focused companies to work together with local companies and it will continue to nurture the expansion of African operating companies across the region and beyond.
