Ceara Basin - Petrobras - BM-CE-2, Petrobras, using the Ocean Courage S/S, spud the 1BRSA1080CES new-field wildcat within the BM-CE-2 Block in the Ceara Basin. Located in water depth of 2,129m, the well has a PTD of 5,528m. Turbidites are the main target (Ubarana and Paracuru formations). Petrobras has drilled two deepwater wells in the basin during the early 1990s but did not drill very deep, the deepest well being the 1CES 0112 CE drilled to a TD of 4,450m in 1,290m water depth.

Discoveries and New Field Declarations
Oriental (Afren) - Ebok North Fault Block (OML 115) – Oil Discovery. On 14 May 2012 Afren announced that the Ebok North Fault Block 1 exploration well was an oil discovery. The well was spudded on 12 April 2012 and was drilled with the Transocean Adriatic IX jack-up drilling rig to a total depth of 1316 m. The well was targeting a separate fault block structure located to the north of the main Ebok field, and has successfully encountered 122.78 m net pay (TVT) of good quality oil in the same Tertiary reservoir sands equivalent to those that have been developed and are in production at the main Ebok field development. Logging operations at the Ebok NFB 1 were undertaken in the second week of May 2012 and indicated a Pmean STOIIP in excess of 100 MMb oil, towards the upper end of Afren's pre-drill expectations. The discovery of significant oil pay at this location underlines the high-grade prospectivity that exists across the wider Ebok/Okwok/OML 115 area, and represents an important step towards unlocking the full volume and value potential of what is a core hub of Afren's portfolio. The well will now be suspended whilst Afren and Oriental determine the optimal development solution for Ebok NFB. This will likely incorporate synergies using the existing production, storage and offtake infrastructure at the main Ebok field and could involve the early drilling of new production wells from the existing wellhead platform at Ebok West Fault Block, followed by a full field development of Ebok NFB. The Transocean Adriatic IX rig will commence the drilling of early production wells at the recent Okoro East discovery. Afren acquired an 348 sq km Ocean Bottom Cable (OBC) 3D seismic survey over the Ebok/Okwok/OML 115 area in 2011 and as with the Ufon prospect, well control data suggests the presence of an extensive “D” series sands horizon with up to 35 MMboe gross un-risked P50 resources. Interest in OML 115 is split between Oriental (50% + Operator) and Afren (50% Technical Operator), with Afren paying 100% pre cost recovery.

Discoveries and New Field Declarations
In just two days this week three companies announced discoveries in the Rovuma basin adding a further 16- 36 Tcf of gas.
On 15 May 2012, Anadarko and its partner Cove Energy reported that Golfinho 1 encountered more than 59 m net of natural gas pay in two high-quality Oligocene fan systems that are age-equivalent to, but geologically distinct from, the previous discoveries in the Prosperidade complex. The discovery adds an estimated 7 to 20-plus Tcf of incremental recoverable resources over a significant areal extent and is even more significant as it only lies 16 km offshore, providing potential cost advantages for future development options.
On 16 May 20912 , BG and Ophir announced that the Mzia-1 well in Block 1 intersected a 178m gas bearing column with 55m of net pay in the Upper Cretaceous. Mean in place resource is estimated at 3.5 Tcf gas, with significant potential upside. In place low case, mean and high case resources estimated at 2.0 - 3.5 - 6.0 TCF respectively. Mzia 1 is located 45km off the coast of Tanzania and 45km north of the Mozambique maritime border and was drilled in a water depth of 1,639m.
On the same day Eni announced that Coral 1 encountered a total of 75 m of gas pay in single high-quality Eocene sand and is particularly significant s as it confirms a new exploration play, which is estimated to contain between 7 and 10 Tcf of gas in place, exclusively on Rovuma Offshore Area 4. With these new results at Coral 1, Eni estimates that the resources exclusively located in Area 4 range between 15 and 20 Tcf of gas in place and the new discovery increases the total potential of the Mamba complex discovered to hold between 47 and 52 Tcf of gas in place. Coral 1 is located 65 km off the Capo Delgado coast in a water depth of 2,261 m and was drilled to a total depth of 4,869 m.
There has been talk of a unitized and co-ordinated development with CEO level talks between Anadarko and Eni. But there are differences, Eni’s deeper water Area 4 discoveries seem to favour a floating LNG solution, Anadarko and BG’s shallower water discoveries seem to favour subsea tie backs to onshore LNG plants. The scale of BG’s discovery in Tanzania would seem indicate two or three train plant, whilst Anadarko has proposed a scalable LNG solution with first gas from two trains possible between 2015-2018 and then increasing to six or more trains. Both operating groups in are thought to be seeking investors with deepwater LNG development experience and Shell is in the process of finalising its acquisition of Cove Energy, which has an interest in BG’s Block 1 in Tanzania.
The Rovuma basin is one of the last passive margin Tertiary delta systems in the world to be explored. Before Anadarko signed the original licence in December 2006, there had been very little exploration in the area, with a small amount of 2D seismic data and one exploratory well on the onshore part of the basin.
The acquisition of high quality large scale surveys has provided the key to identifying subtle stratigraphic traps and increasingly accurate AVO analysis has yielded success rates of over 90%. The Rovuma basin is one of the last explored passive margin Tertiary delta systems in the world. It was initially thought to be a classic extensional-contractional system with early Tertiary to present day deformation, which was interpreted as a response to up-dip sediment loading and regional tilting, above a master detachment in the late Cretaceous to early Tertiary. Data from recent wells and 3D data has indicated a more complex extensional-contractional system with additional complexity created by an interplay of east-west trending fold and thrust belts. The basin has multiple source rocks and contains wide range of high-quality reservoirs rocks. All of the operators have reported that there many other prospects on their blocks and have extensive seismic and drilling programmes through the remainder of the year and into 2013.

Contract Relinquishments
SOCO announced on 16 May 2012 that, whilst the results of the interpretation of the new 3D seismic, acquired over the Cuu Long Basin Block 16-1 Te Giac Den Appraisal Area in late 2011, enhanced the understanding of the area, the company concluded that it was not in shareholders' best interests to drill another well in the block on a sole risk basis. Although farm-out discussions were held with interested parties, a definitive agreement could not be reached. As a consequence, SOCO has informed the relevant authorities that it relinquished the TGD appraisal area upon the expiry of its option to drill, which ended 30 April 2012.

Ivanhoe Energy, Coban Oil and Gas. On 9 May 2012, Ivanhoe Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Coban Oil and Gas to assess the feasibility of building a Heavy to Light (HTL) facility to upgrade heavy crude oil in Guatemala, both for domestic consumption and international export. The HTL facility will be required to upgrade at least 10,000 bopd of crude oil. Upon the conclusion of the feasibility work the parties expect to execute a Definitive Agreement to create a joint venture company to build the facility which will be licenced for operation in Guatemala.

Tecpetrol – Atarraya 1. On 9 May 2012, Tecpetrol made an oil discovery with new field wildcat Atarraya 1 on the Llanos Basin CPO-7 Block, according to a press release from its 20% partner in the block Petronova. The well was tested on a 4m interval in the Upper Carbonera C-7 sand and had a natural flow on a 1” choke of 830 bo/d for a seven hour period. The oil was 23 degrees API gravity with only a one half percent water cut. Total test period was for 25 hours with varying choke sizes. The average porosity was 27% for the producing interval. The well will now be completed in that interval and tested on a jet pump to determine its true potential. Extended production tests are also planned after permits are obtained. Four other prospective sands were also encountered in the Carbonera C-7 interval. The Atarraya 1 was spud on 14 April 2012 and reached a total depth of 1,496m in less than two weeks. Planned total depth of the well was 1,524m with objectives in the Carbonera C-7 interval and the Mirador Formation. The well is located between the Ocelot and Caracara fields about 15km northeast of the latter. Tecpetrol plans two more exploration wells on the block.
